Abstract/Contents:"Higher carrier volumes of trifloxysulfuron have increased dallisgrass control, but it is unclear if this is attributed to better foliar coverage or root/rhizome absorption. Research was conducted in 2020 on a mature stand of dallisgrass (3.8 cm height) in the rough of Pine Hills Golf Course in Winder, GA. The experimental design was a 3 x 4 factorial with irrigation (none, 0.64 cm 24 hr after treatment, and 0.64 cm 24 and 72 hr after treatment) as the main factor and trifloxysulfuron treatment (non-treated, trifloxysulfuron at 28 g ai ha-1 and carrier volume (CV) of 407 L ha-1, trifloxysulfuron at 57 g ai ha-1 and CV of 814 L ha-1, or trifloxysulfuron at 112 g ai ha-1 and CV of 1628 L ha-1) as the subplot factor. All trifloxysulfuron treatments were applied with a CO2 backpack sprayer and with the addition of methylated seed oil at a rate of 0.5% v/v. A 10.2-cm golf course cup-cutter centered over each plant was used to remove 10 soil cores (aboveground biomass and corresponding rhizomes together as a 7 cm plug) from each plot. Soil cores were cut in half vertically and a furrow was created down the center of each soil profile. Furrows were seeded with annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) and placed in the Athens Turfgrass Research and Education Center greenhouse. Germination depth was determined 2 wks after planting to document the movement of trifloxysulfuron through the soil profile. The higher the CV, the deeper trifloxysulfuron moved through the soil profile. Irrigation amount also increased movement through the soil. The greatest depth (9.5 mm) was observed in response to the highest CV + double irrigation. Therefore, higher CV and irrigation may result in greater trifloxysulfuron movement into the rootzone where rhizomes are present."
