| Abstract/Contents: | "While the most dramatic effects of aridification are felt primarily in the Southwest and Intermountain western other regions are experiencing an increased frequency in flash droughts and intensification of interannual drought cycles. Driven by unprecedentedly low stream flows, many jurisdictions have adopted landscape transformation, or "cash for grass" programs. Amidst this landscape, Turfgrass Water Conservation Alliance (TWCA), the Center for Water Efficient Landscaping (CWEL) and Salt Lake City Department of Public Utilities (SLCDPU) launched the first of its kind turf to turf conversion program. This five-year program replaces existing cool season turfgrass with TWCA qualified drought tolerant turfgrass. Successful conversion of existing landscape is a fraction of task. Behavior modification remains the more significant task. Through a combination of water use data comparison, surveys and the use of WaterMaps, the program evaluates water savings, landscape changes, and consumer behavior. Thanks to overwhelming public demand, Turf Trade expanded to three additional jurisdictions (two independent of this program) providing additional insight to messaging response and consumer behavior. Turf Trade provides an invaluable resource for evaluating real versus perceived behavior, messaging efficacy, and large-scale savings actualization versus proven potential. Understanding the nexus of these realms is central to the longevity of turfgrass in the built environment in increasingly arid landscapes." |
