Abstract/Contents:"Anecdotal observations suggest that autumn-applied fungicide has the potential to reduce dollar spot the subsequent growing season. However, the optimal autumn-applied fungicide timing and possible interactions with cultivar susceptibility are unclear. Twelve autumn fungicide timings, including a non-treated control and three creeping bentgrass cultivars ('Coho', '007', and 'Independence', in order of increasing in susceptibility) were evaluated in a factorially arranged randomized complete block design with four replications for the suppression of dollar spot the subsequent season. Seven calendar-based timings were applied as a tank mix of fluazinam and propiconazole either once (three timings), twice (three timings), or thrice (one timing) in September, October and/or November. An eighth calendar-based timing received chlorothalonil thrice. Two fungicide timings were weather dependent (Smith-Kerns model) and applied with the tank mix when the risk index reached 20 or 40%. The tank mix was also applied at a threshold level of 314 mm2 damage over 3 m2. Disease onset and progress during the onset period were influenced by a cultivar x fungicide timing x year interaction, with cultivar having the most dominant impact. Disease onset was delayed the longest on Coho in both years regardless of fungicide timing level. Fungicide timing resulted in a limited delay in onset during 2022; however, some fungicide timings significantly delayed onset on 007 and Independence during 2023. Coho was very effective at reducing disease severity during the onset period, and therefore little effect was observed from fungicide timings. Conversely, several fungicide timings suppressed disease severity on 007 and Independence; September and October timing of fluazinam + propiconazole applications provided the best suppression in both years. Chlorothalonil had no or limited effect on disease severity indicating that other fungicide chemistries should be evaluated. The potential for reducing fungicide inputs appears greatest with adoption of cultivars with the greatest dollar spot tolerance."
