Abstract/Contents:"In 2003, the province of Québec adopted its Pesticide Management Code, requiring all golf courses on its territory to submit a pesticide reduction plan every three years. These plans must include pesticide quantities and treated areas for the previous three years as well as objectives in reduction for the following years and must be signed by a certified agronomist. This regulation resulted in the creation of a database of pesticide applications in the province containing more than 50 000 records that is likely unique in the world. Thus, we developed a hybrid machine-learning model to analyze this database in order to understand the factors affecting pesticide use and to predict future pesticide use based on different climate change scenarios. Since the adoption of this regulation, pesticide use on golf courses has decreased by 20%, with biopesticides now representing 30% of total golf pesticide use. Treated area as well as climate data (air temperature and precipitations) during the golfing season are the parameters that have the most impact on pesticide use. Two different climate change scenarios were evaluated and resulted in projected increases up to 5-fold in pesticide use on golf courses for the 2023-2100 period."
