Abstract/Contents:"Creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera L.) is widely used on temperate golf course putting greens because of its aggressive growth habit and ability to withstand low mowing heights. However, putting green quality often declines in response to sustained summer heat and disease pressure. Plant health product (PHP) applications may have physiological effects and enhance defense systems against various biotic and abiotic stresses. The objectives of the study were to determine morphological and physiological effects of seasonal PHP programs, alone and in a five-way tank mix, on creeping bentgrass and to determine treatment effects on in-vitro antifungal activity and dollar spot disease suppression. The study was conducted on a USGA specification putting green in northern Delaware. The treatments acibenzolar-S-methyl (50% WSP), kelp extract (0-0-1), Bacillus subtilis UD1022, al-tris phosphonate (80% WP), trinexapac-ethyl (11.3%), five-product tank mix, and untreated control were applied at label rates every two weeks from May to September of 2021, 2022, and 2023. Turfgrass quality and chlorophyll content were estimated every two weeks. Plant and soil nutrient contents, and root density were estimated at the beginning, mid, and end of the season. B. subtilis UD1022 colonization of roots was observed via confocal microscopy and quantified as colony forming units. PHPs were also tested in-vitro for antifungal activity against dollar spot pathogen Clarireedia spp. Wild type B. subtilis UD1022 and its mutant sfp- showed highest antagonism against dollar spot pathogen Clarireedia spp. with inhibition rate of 17.2 % and 18.4%, respectively and mycelial growth of 23.9 mm and 23.8 mm, respectively. Plant health products may induce the expression of PR genes and confer disease resistance to creeping bentgrass. Disease and drought stress suppression by exogeneous application of plant health products may reduce fungicide and irrigation inputs on creeping bentgrass putting greens."
