Abstract/Contents:"Turfgrass management is presently facing many challenges due to soil salinization. The major contributor to soil salinization is sodium chloride (NaCl). Salinity imposes ionic, osmotic, and oxidative stresses to the plants which result in several physiological and biochemical alterations. Zoysiagrass is an important turfgrass species that is used widely in the US. Despite a relatively higher salt tolerance than other turfgrass species, leaf firing and reduced growth are some of the most conspicuous symptoms in zoysiagrass under salinity stress, which leads to a drastic economic loss. An interspecific mapping population between tolerant Zoysia matrella acc. PI231146 (narrow leaf) and susceptible Z. japonica var. Meyer (broad leaf) has been developed. Around 200 F2 plants were screened under control (no NaCl) and 30 dS/m levels of salinity (added NaCl). The mapping progeny along with their parents have been phenotyped for morpho-physiological parameters such as maximum quantum yield of photosystem II (FV/FM), cell membrane stability via electrolyte leakage, visual rating (0-9 scale), biomass, percent green cover, and Na+- K+ ratio. Plants showed a wide range of phenotypic responses from extreme susceptibility to high tolerance. A strong negative correlation (r = -0.65) was observed between cell membrane stability and visual rating. Identification of progeny with broad leaves along with higher salt tolerance from the mapping population was noteworthy. The association of phenotypic data with genotypic data, that has been generated through Genotypic-By-Sequencing, will identify key Quantitative Trait Loci (QTL) responsible for salt tolerance and closely associated molecular markers. These QTL and marker information will facilitate the breeding for salt tolerance of zoysiagrass promoting marker-assisted selection."
