Abstract/Contents:"This study investigated the impact of turfgrass species, soil moisture, and mowing height on the peak tibial accelerations of male and female collegiate soccer athletes and their perceptions of surface firmness during controlled activities. The research took place from November 15 to 29, 2022, at the Texas A&M University Turfgrass Field Laboratory in College Station, TX, using a 3x4 factorial crossover design with three evaluation periods. To simulate sand-capped natural turfgrass sports fields, two hybrid bermudagrass plots, and one seashore paspalum plot were established, each measuring 15.2 x 30.5 m. These plots represented different turfgrass species, with one hybrid bermudagrass plot overseeded with perennial ryegrass. The plots were further divided into four management zones based on soil moisture (wet/dry) and mowing height (high/low), with soil moisture levels carefully monitored and adjusted to maintain specific thresholds, along with several surface characteristics. Twelve male and seven female athletes participated in three activities within each management zone for all turfgrass species, and ankle-worn inertia measurement units were used to measure peak tibial accelerations during activities. This was followed by participant surveys to assess their perceptions of firmness. The findings revealed significant interactions between turfgrass species and management zones for surface characteristics, with wet-high zones showing higher force reduction and vertical deformation but lower energy restitution and surface hardness compared to dry-low zones. Turfgrass species had minimal effects on peak tibial accelerations, but management zones significantly impacted these measurements, with firmer surfaces associated with higher tibial accelerations, aligning with athlete perceptions of firmness. The study also identified specific conditions in different zones that affected male and female athletes differently during various activities. In summary, this research highlights the significance of field management in optimizing playing conditions for soccer athletes, potentially benefiting both teams and field managers."
