Abstract/Contents:"Bermudagrass (Cynodon spp.) is a widely distributed grass with extensive cultural, economic, and environmental significance. Bermudagrass breeding programs are developing genetic tools and markers for crop improvement, but first it is important to ensure that available germplasm is characterized correctly. Although botanical descriptors have been assigned for each of the species, bermudagrass exhibits considerable genetic variation and phenotypic plasticity that can often make it difficult to differentiate species. Previous work has identified potential misclassifications in species nomenclature for numerous accessions from publicly available repositories in relation to their genetic markers and ploidy. The objective of this research was to develop a means for confirming bermudagrass species identity by genetic markers from whole genome sequencing. This work builds from previous literature identifying the presence of such species-specific markers and looks to develop and validate these markers for use in a breeding program, providing a novel genetic resource for species identification, such as in the case of germplasm of unknown origin or hybrid progeny from open pollination."
