Abstract/Contents:"Ultradwarf bermudagrass greens (UBG) have become more favorable for establishment due to their superior putting surface and ability to withstand high golf traffic stress. However, UBG can be more sensitive to sustained long-term poor management and other environmental conditions. For these reasons, establishing and maintaining UBG is a major challenge in the transition zone areas that have a limited growing season, leaving golf course superintendents minimal time to repair any observed winter damage. Previous research has shown a clear relationship between winterkill stress and soil moisture (SM) where the use of wetting agents applied when soil temperatures (ST) were forecasted between -9.44 to -3.88 °C maintained acceptable UBG quality for single covered or no covered treatments and provided earlier spring green-up. Furthermore, other covering materials and colors and use of air gaps under covers, have been investigated to determine which material would be most viable to prevent winterkill damage, however, none of these techniques have added benefits compared to covering alone. Extensive research has looked at many aspects related to winterkill stress of UBG, but not at the relationship of SM and ST when comparing single (SC) and double covering (DC) events. The objective of this research is to implement novel technology of capacitive SM sensors to continuously document changes of SM and ST under covering treatments during periods that indicate a threshold for covering. Our research has shown that under two covering events in February (lowest observed ambient temperature (LOAT) = -8.88 °C) and March (LOAT = -4.44 °C) of the 2023 winter season, ST under SC and DC treatments were found to be the same compared to the no covering (NC) treatment. Furthermore, observations showed that SC allows more SM infiltration compared to DC but limits moisture loss compared to NC."
