Abstract/Contents:"Doveweed (Murdannia nudiflora) is a non-grass monocot weed that infests turfgrass in the United States. It germinates after most annual weeds have germinated, normally in June, complicating the use of preemergence (PRE) herbicides that target earlier germinating crabgrasses (Digitaria spp.). Imazaquin, a postemergence (POST) imidazolinone, acetolactate synthase inhibiting herbicide, is known to be effective for doveweed control. However, control with imazaquin and other postemergence herbicides can vary due to difficult herbicide absorption through the waxy cuticle. Research was conducted to evaluate POST doveweed control in warm-season turfgrass with imazaquin, metsulfuron-methyl, and a combination of imazaquin and sulfentrazone. Treatments included a variety of rates of imazaquin, MSM, and sulfentrazone applied alone or in tank mixtures as well as applied once or with multiple sequential applications. Imazaquin mixed with MSM or sulfentrazone resulted in >75% doveweed control 84 days after initial application. MSM and imazaquin applied alone did not provide adequate control. Another study was then initiated to evaluate the effect of soil and foliar applications of atrazine and imazaquin, herbicides with known root uptake, for doveweed control. Application types included applying the herbicide foliar only, soil only, and a broadcast application (foliar and soil). Atrazine controlled doveweed 100% control when applied foliar only, soil only, and the broadcast application. Imazaquin resulted in 100% control of doveweed when applied foliar only and soil only. However, the broadcast application did not result in full control, and the plants recovered three weeks after the application. It is unknown why a dual exposure of foliage and roots would control doveweed less than a foliar only application. Regardless, this data indicates that soil applications of imazaquin or atrazine and, thus, root absorption can aid in doveweed control."
