Abstract/Contents:"This study investigated the spatial relationships between vegetation indices (VIs), tissue N, and soil conditions in real-world settings. Data were collected at The Club at Carlton Woods in Houston, TX, in April 2021 from two sand-capped hybrid bermudagrass and zoysiagrass fairways. Images were captured from 120 m using either a Quantum F90+ or Matrice 200 unmanned aerial vehicle equipped with a MicaSense Altum multispectral camera. Pix4D processed the images into orthomosaics and raster maps of four VIs: normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), normalized difference red edge, green NDVI, and enhanced vegetation index. Ground georeferenced soil moisture (% volumetric water content; VWC), penetration resistance, and NDVI were collected using the Toro Precision Sense 6000. A sampling grid was created for each site and imported into a handheld GNSS device to guide collection of three soil cores per sample location for clippings that were later analyzed for tissue N. Ground data underwent ordinary kriging to create raster maps. The sampling grid points were used to extract values from raster maps, and spatial correlations assessed relationships between variables (α=0.05). Almost all VIs exhibited significant, positive relationships with each other across sites. However, the relationships between VIs and tissue N were consistently found to be non-significant and weak. Tissue N did not exhibit any relationship with VWC or penetration resistance at any site. The general relationship between VIs and VWC was significant and positive on the fairways, while the general relationship between VIs and penetration resistance was not significant and negative on the fairways, except for one zoysiagrass fairway. These results suggest that VIs were highly interrelated, with no clear distinction in their ability to detect spatial variability in tissue N. Instead, they were more closely associated with VWC and, to some extent, penetration resistance on fairways, as visually confirmed by spatial maps."
