Abstract/Contents:"Field experiments were conducted in Athens, GA during summer of 2015 to evaluate the response of bahiagrass and dallisgrass to verticutting frequency. Plants were transplanted 3 weeks prior to trial initiation from naturally occurring populations. A 10.2-cm cup-cutter was used to remove aboveground biomass and corresponding rhizomes together as a plug. Plants were transplanted the same day they were harvested on June 22, 2015 into bare ground. Plots were arranged in a 2 x 4 factorial within a split-plot design with four replications. The main factor was verticutting (no verticutting, verticutting 1x, verticutting 2x, and verticutting 3x). Verticutting was conducted in July, August, and September with a walk-behind dethatcher set to a 1.3 cm depth and 3.2 cm spacing. Subplot factors were Paspalum spp. Each subplot (1.8 x 1.5 m) contained six plugs arranged on a 0.5-m grid. Plots were maintained at 10.2 cm. Lateral plant diameters were recorded at trial initiation and every two weeks through mid-November. Dallisgrass plants exhibited similar plant diameters 1 and 2 MAIT, regardless of treatment. Bahiagrass plant diameters were also similar 1 MAIT, but a significant impact was observed 2 MAIT where plant diameters were 21.4 cm in response to no verticutting followed by (fb) 19.8 cm with verticutting 1x fb 17.8 to 18.4 cm with verticutting 2x. At 3 MAIT, dallisgrass plants in response to verticutting 1x and 2x were 17.8 and 17.7 cm, respectively, fb no verticutting (15.1 cm) and verticutting 3x (14.5 cm). Bahiagrass plants exhibited similar diameters (18.7 to 21.5 cm) 3 MAIT, regardless of treatment. At 4 MAIT, dallisgrass plants exhibited similar diameters (14.9 to 16.6 cm), regardless of treatment. Bahiagrass plants exhibited plant diameters of 19.5 to 20.3 cm in response to no verticutting and verticutting 1x fb verticutting 2x (18.5 cm) fb verticutting 3x (16.3 cm)."
