Abstract/Contents:"Fusilade II herbicide (fluazifop-p-butyl) applied to zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica) to suppress bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon) contamination can cause unacceptable injury to zoysiagrass. Recognition herbicide [(trifloxysulfuron-sodium + metcamifen (safener which accelerates the metabolism and subsequent detoxification of herbicides)] is a newly released formulation with potential for significant bermudagrass control without causing zoysiagrass injury. Research was conducted to evaluate bermudagrass injury and zoysiagrass phytotoxicity when Fusilade II is applied alone or tank-mixed with Recognition to identify application timings and rates for enhanced bermudagrass suppression. Recognition + 24 fl. oz./A of Fusilade II applied in August with a sequential application four weeks later had almost complete injury of bermudagrass until winter dormancy in late October. Zoysiagrass phytotoxicity was significant when Fusilade II was applied alone at 12 fl. oz/A. Minimal zoysiagrass phytotoxicity was observed throughout the 9 week rating period when Recognition was tank-mixed with Fusilade II. Recognition + 24 fl. oz/A of Fusilade II applied in June with a sequential application four weeks later had > 90% bermudagrass injury for over 60 days when a sequential application was made 4 weeks following initial application. Sequential applications of Recognition + 12 or 24 fl. oz/A Fusilade II significantly suppressed bermudagrass compared to single applications. Recognition (1.29 oz/A) combined with Fusilade II (24 fl. oz/A), with a sequential application made at four weeks, will provide bermudagrass suppression for sixty days or longer without causing injury to zoysiagrass when applications are made in either the spring or fall. Fusilade II can be applied at higher than currently labeled rates when tank mixed with Recognition, which has a positive effect on bermudagrass suppression."
