Abstract/Contents:"Bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon) and zoysiagrass (Zoysia spp.) are desirable turfgrasses propagated as sod. Bermudagrass contamination is a concern in zoysiagrass fields for certification and customer satisfaction. Early morning dew patterns have traditionally been used as a method to visually detect bermudagrass contamination in zoysiagrass fields. Research was conducted to quantify the difference in dew deposition and retention of the two turfgrass species. Dew was collected on turf maintained at 0.3, 3.2, 3.2, and 4.5 cm on 25 May, 25 May, 31 May, and 26 September 2023, respectively. Dew was collected from bermudagrass and zoysiagrass areas approximately every 15 minutes and collection time was recorded relative to sunrise. Collection kits containing gloves, paper towels, and an airtight gallon bag were weighed prior to collection. Surface moisture was removed from a 929 cm2 area using paper towels until no moisture could be removed by the gloved hand. Final weight of the collection kit was taken to determine the increase in mass, equating to the dew volume collected. On each collection date, bermudagrass dew volume was significantly greater than zoysiagrass dew volume. At initial collection times, bermudagrass, at 3.2 and 4.5 cm, held 200 to 700 L ha-1 more dew than zoysiagrass. Dew volume significantly decreased as minutes after sunrise increased. Dew retention patterns can be detected using aerial imagery. Images of a mixed bermudagrass and zoysiagrass stand maintained at 0.3 cm were taken with a DJI Zenmuse X5S camera and processed in ArcGIS® Pro. Conversion from RGB to black and white was able to differentiate the two species based on the dew deposition patterns. Research will be continued to create a workflow to map bermudagrass patches for targeted spray application."
