Abstract/Contents:"High summer heat damages are major issues in growing cool-season turfgrasses such as creeping bentgrass which is a widely used and grown cool-season turfgrass. Heat stress results premature leaf senescence. Delaying or suppressing leaf senescence would improve heat tolerance in turfgrasses. Although extensive works have been conducted in foliar application of different hormones such as cytokinin in managing heat stress in annual crops, and cytokinins as a component in biostimulant products used in turfgrass and other crops, however, mechanisms how cytokinin priming may enhance plant tolerance to heat stress are not well understood. The objective of the current study was to identify whether different methods of cytokinin priming [using either synthetic cytokinin or cytokinin oxidase/dehydrogenase (CKX) inhibitors] would enhance heat tolerance in creeping bentgrass. A creeping bentgrass cultivar 'Penncross' was established in different pots and sprayed with four different priming treatments: deionized water (untreated control), 25 μM trans-zeatin riboside (synthetic cytokinin) and one μM each of 3TFM-2HE and 2AD,5OMe-3,5DCl (CKX inhibitors). Primed plants were exposed to control (23/18 °C; day/night) and heat stress (35/30 °C; day/night) conditions. No differences in turf quality were observed among all four priming treatments throughout the control temperature treatment. Priming with cytokinin and CKX inhibitors increased turfgrass quality compared to untreated control under severe heat stress. Priming with cytokinin and CKX inhibitors also increased percent green cover, maximum photochemical efficiency of PSII and non-photochemical quenching whereas reduced canopy temperature suggesting cytokinin and CKX inhibitors priming were effecting in suppressing leaf senescence and managing heat stress in creeping bentgrass."
