Abstract/Contents:"Many annual bluegrass (Poa annua L.) populations developed resistance to glyphosate due to heavy reliance on this herbicide, especially when managing warm season grasses. Objectives of this study were to determine the depth of remediation necessary to remove annual bluegrass seed and determine the frequency of glyphosate resistant annual bluegrass by soil depth. In early August 2022, 16 soil cores were obtained from a golf course in Knoxville, TN. The soil cores (11 cm -diameter) were transported to Purdue University and sectioned into six increments (05, 510, 1015, 1530, 3050, 50100 mm). Each of the increments was placed in a growth chamber set to 19/10° day/night, to germinate the seedbank. Obtained annual bluegrass plants were transplanted into separate containers when they reached approximately 2 cm in height. All plants were initially sprayed with 840 g ha-1 glyphosate at the 2 to 3 tiller stage, and subjected to the second screening with a higher rate of glyphosate (1680 g ha-1) 14 days after initial treatment (DAIT). All glyphosate treatments included nonionic surfactant and 2.0% sprayable ammonium sulfate (w/w). At 14 and 28 DAIT, plants were visually rated as resistant or susceptible, and a digital image of each plant was taken to determine the green cover. The percent of glyphosate resistant plants obtained from visual ratings varied by depth and ranged from 26 to 45% between 0 to 30 mm in the soil profile. However, the resistant accessions were also found in the deepest examined soil increments. The green cover did not statistically differ by depth in the soil profile across all 16 soil cores. Overall, 86% of annual bluegrass plants germinated from the upper 15 mm in the soil profile, which indicates that removal of this layer could significantly reduce annual bluegrass seedbank."
