Abstract/Contents:"Buckhorn plantain (Pantago lanceolata L.) is a perennial broadleaf weed that has developed resistance to 2,4-D in turf. Cross-resistance to synthetic auxins have been reported among annual weed species; however, research on cross-resistance in perennial broadleaf weeds is scarce. The objective of this research was to determine the level of resistance among 2,4-D resistant buckhorn plantain populations across the US (GA, IN, MO, OH, PA) to various synthetic auxin herbicides from different chemical classes. Treatments consisted of 13 populations, 10 herbicides, and a nontreated control. Herbicides included synthetic auxins in the benzoic acid, phenoxy-carboxylic acid, pyridine-carboxylic acid, pyridyloxy-carboxylic acid, and quinoline-carboxylic acid chemical families. Each herbicide was applied once at either the 2x label rate or the maximum allowable annual use rate. The greenhouse experiment contained 8 cm by 8 cm pots filled with a 2:1 United States Golf Association sand to topsoil mixture and was arranged in a randomized complete block design with four replications. Herbicides were applied in a spray chamber calibrated to deliver a volume of 407 L ha-1 using a single TeeJet 8002EVS nozzle at 275 kPa. Shoot biomass was harvested at 6 weeks after application. The biomass of the nontreated control within population was compared to the biomass of plants treated with herbicides. Only phenoxy-carboxylic acid herbicide-treated plants were similar to the nontreated plant in some populations (2,4-D resistant populations), and cross-resistance to multiple chemical classes was not observed. Applying 2,4-D did not reduce biomass compared to the nontreated control in four populations. Biomass was greater in 2,4-D treatments than non-phenoxy herbicides for four other populations. Three of those four populations had similar biomass among all phenoxy herbicides tested. The consistent lack of resistance among non-phenoxy herbicides was promising as it allows turf managers options for controlling 2,4-D-resistant buckhorn plantain in turfgrasses."
