Abstract/Contents: | "Buchloë dactyloides (Nutt.) Engelm. seed is relatively expensive, slow to germinate and produces few seedlings, taking two to five years to produce a good stand. This is due to germination inhibitor(s) in the burr. The burr is hard and surrounds 2-3 caryopses. The caryopses were removed from the burr in an attempt to increase the number of seedlings germinating and to decrease the time required for germination. Decortication methods were designed to remove the caryopses from the burr. The method of decortication used in this experiment was a barley pearler. Burrs treated with 5% potassium nitrate and a six-week cold treatment (Hays treated) and non-Hays treated burrs were run through a barley pearler and the caryopses collected. Results indicate that extracted Buchloë dactyloides caryopses germinated faster than those enclosed in the burr. Decortication increased the percent germination and decreased the time required for germination to occur, potentially improving the establishment of this environmentally positive species." |
