Abstract/Contents:"Weighing lysimeters were used to determine relative evapotranspiration (ET) rates of perennial herbaceous ground covers and turf in greenhouse studies. When relative ET was estimated during two consecutive experiments, tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb., cv. Mustang II) had the highest mean water use rate (3.6 mm day⁻¹). Second in water use rate was Bugleweed (Ajuga repens L., cv. Bronze Beauty) with a mean rate of 3.3 mm day⁻¹. Intermediate water use rates were recorded for Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L., cv. Park) and Periwinkle (Vinca minor L., cv. La Grave) with means of 2.8 mm day⁻¹ and 2.7 mm day⁻¹. The lowest mean water use rates were recorded on two turfgrasses, Buchloë dactyloides [Nutt.] Engelm., cv. 609 and Zoysia japonica Steud., cv. Meyer with 2.3 mm day⁻¹. This was a very limited comparison. However, these results indicate that herbaceous ground covers may not be "low water use" alternatives when compared with at least some turfgrasses."
