Abstract/Contents: | "Polar lipid fatty acids and free sterols are major factors regulating structure and function of plant cell membranes and influencing plant adaptation to environmental stresses. Application of fortified seaweed extract (FSE) has been reported to enhance drought resistance in crops and turfgrass. The objective of this study was to ascertain the influence of FSE application on cell membrane components under well-watered or drought-stressed conditions. Total lipids, polar fatty lipids, and sterols in perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) treated with or without FSE, as well as with or without drought stress, were studied. Both the FSE and the drought treatments significantly changed concentration and proportion of membrane lipids and sterols. Leaf water potential was found to be higher in the FSE-treated ryegrass than in the control under both well-watered and drought-stressed conditons. The FSE-induced enhancement of drought resistance may relate to the alteration of cell membrane composition in the ryegrass leaves." |
