Abstract/Contents:"The accumulation of carbohydrates is a key process in the cold acclimation and winter survival of grasses. Since carbohydrate synthesis is driven by energy from photosynthesis, grasses that have a higher photosynthetic efficiency during hardening should be capable of producing and storing more carbohydrates. Chlorophyll fluorescence parameters, including the F^D[v:F^D[m ratio, were used to estimate the photosynthetic efficiency of photosystem II in three overwintering turfgrasses: Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis 'Touchdown'), perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne 'SR4200'), and supina bluegrass (Poa supina 'Supranova'). Throughout the fall, winter, and spring, crown samples were collected monthly from field plots in order to determine the carbohydrate composition and concentrations in these species. The F^D[v:F^D[m ratio of supina bluegrass was significantly lower than that of the other two species throughout the experimental period, indicating a lower photosynthetic efficiency. This effect, which was due to higher Fₒ readings in the supina bluegrass, was particularly pronounced in early spring. The relationship between the chlorophyll fluorescence readings, environmental parameters, and carbohydrates status in the three turfgrass species will be discussed."
