| Abstract/Contents: | "Trinexapac-ethyl (TE) is known to be highly effective on zoysiagrass and bermudagrass. But little is known about the effects of ethephon (E) upon these two species. Experiments were conducted comparing these compounds on 'Korean Common' zoysiagrass and 'Vamont' bermudagrass turf. With zoysiagrass for six weeks after treatment, TE reduced clipping weights an average of 56% at 0.10kg ai ha⁻¹, 72% at 0.19 and 79% at 0.38, while E reduced clipping weights at averages of 22 to 46% in a range of 1.14 to 4.58 kg ai ha⁻¹. The 2.28-kg rate was most effective. Turf quality with TE decreased an average of 8% while it increased and average of 11% with E. With bermudagrass for six weeks after treatment, TE reduced clipping weights an average of 94% at 0.29 kg ai ha⁻¹, while E reduced clipping weights an average of 46% at 4.58. Turf quality with TE decreased an average of 18% while it remained unchanged with E. TE caused stronger growth reduction than E with both species, but it also caused reduction in turf quality. Since the loss in turf quality was neither permanent nor severe, these two products offer the turfgrass manager a choice between greater efficacy or higher quality turf." |
