Abstract/Contents:"Many piedmont soils of the Southeast U.S.A. have a compacted layer 10 to 15 cm below the soil surface and low pH subsoil layers that restrict root growth resulting in susceptibility to drought. By contrast, plants with root systems that can penetrate a clayey hardpan and tolerate acid soils should have greater drought tolerance. We observed root growth, distribution, and turnover using minirhizotron observations tubes installed vertically to observe roots to a depth of 20 cm and tubes at 45° angle to observe roots to 65 cm depth in 10 m² plots of different tallfescue (Festuca arundinacia) genotypes planted during the fall of 1998. By 100 days after planting (DAP) we could distinguish between three root distribution patterns: i) deep rooted, such as JessupII and H70NSE, which had relatively greater root length below 45 cm soil depth; ii) shallow rooted, such as H7ER, BLNBK, and E9BK, which had relative greater root length above 25 cm but lesser root length below 45 cm; and iii) weak rooted, such as PC5 and 95PC1, which had relatively lesser root length at all depths."
