Abstract/Contents:"Buffalograss (Buchloe dactyloides) has been characterized as having minimal response to nitrogen fertilizer applications, but to date no research has determined the fate of fertilizer nitrogen applied to buffalograss. Nitrogen fate was investigated in buffalograss, Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis), and tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea). The research objectives were to determine the quantity and turnover rate of fertilizer nitrogen in aboveground vegetation, thatch, roots, and soil. In June 1997, 5% 15N enriched ammonium nitrate was applied at 24.4 and 48.8 kg N ha⁻¹ to Kentucky bluegrass and tall fescue and at 48.8 and 97.7 kg N ha⁻¹ to buffalograss. Subsequent nitrogen applications in 1997 and 1998 were with an unlabeled ammonium nitrate fertilizer. Preliminary results indicate differences in nitrogen recovery among turfgrass species. Kentucky bluegrass generally had the highest nitrogen recovery among species."
