| Abstract/Contents: | "Mutagenesis of seeds or vegetative plant parts can be an effective means for modifying and/or improving certain plant characteristics. It allows for rapid improvement of certain plant characteristics if efficient screening methods are available. Three turf cultivars were developed at Tifton, Georgia using Cobalt 60 gamma radiation. 'TifBlair' centipedegrass was selected for cold resistance and low soil pH resistance after 3 cycles of recurrent radiation of seeds at 120 Gy. 'TifSport' was one of 66 finer-textured mutants recovered from irradiated (80 Gy) dormant stolons of 'Midiron'. TifSport is significantly finer-textured than Midrion and has better cold resistance as well as fall and spring color than 'Tifway'. 'TifEagle' is one of 45 surviving mutants recovered from irradiated (70 Gy) dormant stolons of 'Tifway II'. TifEagle can be mowed at 3 mm and does not have the plant pigments that cause turf to become red or purple in the fall." |
