| Abstract/Contents: | "Creeping bentrass (Agrostis palustris) is marginally adapted for the humid SE U.S., so management techniques that foster year-round quality bentgrass putting greens are important. Mycorrhizae have been shown to increase growth and yield of some agronomic crops. The objective of this research was to examine the natural population of VAM in a creeping bentgrass putting green as affected by nitrogen (N) rate and greens mix. The experiment was a 2 x 2 factorial of N rate (0.3 g N mĀ²/week or 0.6 g N mĀ²/week) and greens mix (sand or 85%sand/15%peat) replicated four times. Samples were taken monthly and densities of arbuscules, vesicles and hyphae were estimated by a line-intersect method. Neither mix type nor N rate affected arbuscular abundance or hyphal infection rates, but vesicular abundances were higher in the 85%sand/15%peat greens mix treatments. Time of sampling (month) also affected vesicular abundances." |
