| Abstract/Contents: | "Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) has proven to be a fast, noninvasive geophysical tool - ideal for detecting and accurately measuring the location and depth of natural and cultural subsurface features. In the fall of 1999, a GPR study was conducted at the Carbondale, Illinois Park District's Hickory Ridge Golf Course. The purpose of the investigation was to test the feasibility and effectiveness of GPR for locating subsurface golf green features such as: drainage lines, rootzone mixture thickness, contrasting soil layers, and compacted soil layers. The results of the study show that the electrically resistive, sandy rootzone mixture found in golf greens is ideally suited to GPR investigations. In this study the GPR located and mapped: the thickness and distribution of the sandy rootzone mixture, areas of soil compaction, areas of wetness and poor drainage, and the depth and location of buried drainage lines." |
