Abstract/Contents:Discusses two arguments against the USGA's greens. The first argument addresses the biological characteristics of the greens; it states that the USGA's sand-based green is flawed because sand-peat blends start out devoid of microorganisms. The second argument states that calcined clay and diatomaceous earth would enhance sand and peat productivity because they have superior water availability, infiltration rates, aeration, and improved nutrient retention in the root zone. Points out that "evidence that USGA putting greens initially suffer from lack of microbial activity is scarce... Our research indicates that the global microbial activity in an 85/15 sand-peat putting green does start out low, but within 3 months after seeding, is as high or higher than in mixes amended with innoculum and/or organic materials that stimulate microorganism growth." Also compares the properties of inorganic materials to sand and peat such as porosity, cation exchange capacity, and bulk density.
