Abstract/Contents:"Conflicting recommendations exist regarding the proper mixture of Kentucky bluegrass (KBG) and perennial ryegrass (PRG) to seed in order to obtain a 50:50 stand. The objective was to test the hypothesis that the composition of a turf stand depended on the type of KBG used in the mix. Plots were seeded in 1998 and 1999 using a blend of PRG mixed with varying percentages of one of four blends of KBG. Mixtures contained 95, 85, 75, 65, 50, or 25% KBG. Each KBG blend contained three cultivars from either aggressive, BVMG, compact, or common types. Simulated football traffic was applied for 10 weeks during the autumn beginning 12 months after establishment. Turf density, quality, weed encroachment, and species composition were evaluated periodically. Data were analyzed by ANOVA as a 6 x 4 factorial. Mixtures with 35% or more PRG established quicker than mixes with 25% or less PRG, though turf cover was similar for all mixtures 12 months after establishment. The percentage of KBG increased during the first 12 months except for mixes with common types. All mixes with 75% or less of KBG produced swards with less than 40% KBG 14 months after establishment. Only mixes with 95% KBG resulted in swards with more than 50% KBG, except for the mix of common KBG which had 44% KBG."
