Abstract/Contents:"Our goal is to develop an affordable but accurate temperature monitoring system for turfgrass field research. The system that was evaluated was comprised of 60 precalibrated DS 1820 solid state temperature sensors (Dallas Semiconductor, Dallas, TX) with a listed accuracy of ± 0.5o C. One continuous 22 AWG tray cable was used to connect the sensors in a multi-drop fashion using a short piece of "pig-tail" wire. The one-wire bus was connected to a circuit that converted sensor signals through a computer com-port to a signal that was compatible to the one-wire communication protocol. Server software was used to acquire temperature data into a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. Communication between the spreadsheet and the server was done using Dynamic Data Exchange protocol, a built-in feature of Microsoft Windows. A macro for the spreadsheet was written to automate the process of testing and recording the data. The system was run using a 100 MHz Pentium personal computer. There have been two major problems: 1) faulty sensor/cable connections developed over time due to moisture accumulation and subsequent corrosion at the point of sensor/cable attachment, and 2) the sensors slowly lost calibration in the field. Further system modifications to improve wiring connections and sensor stability are being made to address these concerns. The results will be presented."
