| Abstract/Contents: | "Golf course putting greens are often constructed with two layers, the root zone mixture consisting of a high sand content overlying a gravel layer. This practice is to ensure rapid drainage with minimal compaction. The objective of this research was to characterize the physical properties relative to drainage and moisture retention of a medium-coarse textured sand used for putting green construction. In laboratory studies, drainage characteristics, water retention, and matric potential energies were measured. Various amendments, gravel fractions, and the use of a fabric barrier between the rootzone layer and gravel were also investigated. Lastly, a moisture probe based on soil dielectric properties was compared to gravimetric water content and matric potential data. An inexpensive, reliable probe for guiding irrigation would be of great value to turfgrass professionals. Experimental results will be presented." |
