Abstract/Contents:"The position of a golf ball within fairway turf often effects [affects] a golfer's ability to make proper contact with the ball and control its flight. Golf course fairway turfs are typically mowed 1.3 to 2.5 cm. When maintained at the higher end of this range, turf species and cultivar as well as turf mowing height often determines the position of the golf ball. At present, there is no quantitative method to accurately measure ball lie on a golf course fairway. The objective of this study was to develop a quantitative method to measure differences in golf ball position on Kentucky bluegrass fairway turf. A device was designed to measure the distance from the upper surface of the turfgrass canopy to the top edge of the golf ball. The device uses digital calipers modified to accurately measure the amount of golf ball exposed above the turf canopy. In 1999, this device was used to test golf ball position within twenty-five Kentucky bluegrass cultivars mowed at 2.2 cm in Urbana, IL, and 1.9 cm in West Lafayette, IN. ANOVA determined significant ball lie differences in both locations with means ranging from 19.12 to 24.64 mm in Urbana and 22.56 to 25.56 mm in West Lafayette. Additional data collected using an improved ball lie measuring device from golf course fairways will be presented."
