Abstract/Contents:"This research project was comparing composted organic materials with an organic slow release fertilizer, IBDU at a low N input regime on fairway bentgrasses. The materials included a composted urban leaf litter, sawdust/manure mixture and IBDU. These materials were applied to one cultivar of colonial bentgrass (Agrostis capillaris L.) and three cultivars of creeping bentgrass (A. palustris Huds.) at the rate of .0.24.4 kg/ha in the months of April, June, and September for a total 73.2 kg/ha. The plots were sampled one month after application to evaluate the nitrogen concentration of the leaf clippings and thatch material. The nitrogen concentration was measured using a Leco 2000 CHN. Visual readings were taken for evaluation. In comparison of N recovery in the clippings, 'Exeter' had lower N concentrations than the other cultivars in Oct. and no difference in May and July. There was no difference found in the N concentrations of thatch among the fertilizer sources. IBDU showed better N recovery in all the samples dates than the leaf and sawdust/manure composts in all the grasses studied. The visual readings showed that 'Exeter' composts held a higher quality in the summer months than the other cultivars studied."
