Abstract/Contents:"Potassium fertilization of turfgrass, particularly of creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris Huds.) on predominantly sand-based putting greens, has been highly recommended with little regard for soil levels of K. In over 20 years of observations, K applied to a calcareous, sand-based putting green at rates as high as 61 kg K/ha applied 5 times per season has increased soil levels (86 vs. 28 mg/kg) and foliar concentrations (21300 vs. 18500 mg/kg) of K, but has failed to produce responses in color, visual quality, incidence of Poa annua L., resistance to dollar spot or snow mold, or resistance to wear. In the same plots, soil-applied N and P and foliar-applied Fe produced responses in color and improved visual quality. N also reduced the incidence of dollar spot and increased wear tolerance. No Poa annua was observed in the absence of applied P. Soil-applied S lowered the pH slightly (7.26 vs. 7.44) but produced no visible effects."
