Abstract/Contents:"The literature contains many success stories using microoganisms to control plant diseases in greenhouse and laboratory experiments. The same experiments conducted under field conditions have most often failed. The main reason for failure has been the inability to establish the antagonist in the field. Greenhouse and laboratory experiments have been successful because the soil was sterilized before the biocontrol organism was added, thus eliminating competition from native microflora. In our studies, Pseudomonas aureofaciens was applied to the turf five times a week at 2 x 10 7 CFU per sq cm. P. aureofaciens applied five times a week gave excellent control of dollar spot (Sclerotinia homoeocarpa) which was equivalent to the control provided by the standard fungicides chlorothalonil and propiconazole. Similar results were obtained with P. aureofaciens applied five times a week against Microdochium patch (Microdochium nivale). Frequent application of biological control organisms for the control of turfgrass diseases eliminates having to establish the antagonists in the soil, which has always been the biggest draw back to successful biological control using microorganisms."
