| Abstract/Contents: | Discusses the evolution of golf courses, tracing the origins of links-style courses and examining the development of in-land courses. Describes some of the early maintenance mistakes on in-land courses, such as rolling the greens "with iron rollers, basting down the soil so that no grass could grow through it, no ball would stop on it, and no putting was possible on it." Also discusses the importance of taking into consideration soil type when establishing maintenance practices. Briefly mentions that "it is often possible to play the same hole, or one or two holes, twice over, and thus, in each instance, making a single green serve a double purpose, with a cent per cent saving in each case both in the first outlay and the current expense of maintenance" for low-volume, smaller courses. Also discusses the presence of rabbits on golf courses, stating that they "crop the grass short and produce an admirable quality of springy turf." |
