Abstract/Contents: | "A coordinated team effort for the development of turfgrass cultivars with tolerance to specific environmental stresses has not been attempted in turfgrass improvement. The major types of turfgrass stresses, the components and resultant complexity of each type of stress, and the potential for success in cultivar improvement are discussed. A physiological model is presented with water use rate reduction being used as the example. Included in the model are a description of the environmental conditions, the chronology of plant responses, characterizations at the interprediction parameters. A hypothesis concerning the most effective plant predictive parameters is established. Using turfgrass selection possessing a full range of a plant predictive characteristic, the hypothesis is tested. If confirmed, the next phase involves studies of inheritance and methods for incorporating the desirable traits into an improved cultivar." |
